Barcelona vs Inter Millan: The Defending Champion still showed his Class

The much anticipated fixture in the UEFA Champions League match day 5 between Barcelona vs Inter Millan ended up with confortable 2-0 win for the home side. Barcelone the reigning champion came into the match with amount of vulnerabilities. Barcelona only had one win after 4 matches in the group F qualification stage, yet they also had to face injury problems which hit their stars in recent weeks. Their striking force partner Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lionel Messi were only listed on the bench after confirmed recovering from injury while Yaya Toure was unable to appear due to illness. This situation made Barcelona capable enough for early exit from the competition before final qualification match on Tuesday December 8, 2009.


In the other side, Inter Millan entered the game with many advantages. After dominating the Italian Seri A in these 5 years, many football fans were expected Inter Millan to establish themselves as a consistent champion contender in the Champions League. Losing Zlatan Ibrahimovic who joined Barcelona early this season is not lessen their strength since in the opposite direction Samuel Eto’o the match winner of the last Champions League final joined them from Barcelona. They were coming into the match with in-form side and enjoyed a point lead ahead of Barcelona to sit top of the table.
However, as the game went on, Barcelona showed why they were the Champion of European football. Barcelona were dominating the game in almost all aspects who limited Inter to just one decent attempt to goal in the first half which saw Diego Milito launched a long-range attack only to test Victor Valdes readiness. Barca broke the deadlock ten minutes into the game when the highly rated defender Gerard Pique win duel with Thiago Motta to score goal after receiving assist from Thiery Henri who flicked on Xavi’s corner. Then Barca doubled the lead when Pedro Rodrigues shoot over Julio Cesar after accepting Dani Alves’s cross. Barca continued to keep possession dominantly in the second half. Although they were unable to get additional goal, they succeed to let Inter Millan only to focus on their defence. With this result, it does not only mean Barcelona can get their Champions League campaign back on track, but also boost confidence as they had been burdened by reputation as European champion.
